Flowlight concept: write in midair — with lasers!

flowlight_main.jpg

Sort of like a laser pointer with super powers, the Flowlight is a design concept that lets you write in midair with streams of light. Sounds like pretty much the coolest thing I've ever seen, though it has one key limitation: it's a two-piece device. The pen will only create light streams in the air above another unit, a sort of big, cone-shaped base station. The base focuses a laser beam 100 times per second to where the pen is, creating small plasma points that glow in midair.

Sounds vaguely like lightning, though presumably a lot safer. No need to worry just yet, though, since the Flowlight is just a concept — albeit one we would buy tickets to see in action.

Wow. I have no idea what this could be used for (except eye candy), but it's damn impressive, even if it's dependant on that base.

I WONT ONE OF THESE

you *WONT* one of these??? I don't know if people of the illiterate persuasion are allowed to have high-tech devices...

Looks like real projected holograms are on their way if that really works:)

By NightShade_PA at 7:38 AM ON 07/31/08

I agree Mace. Perhaps holograms are slowly starting to come into reality and not just on SciFi movies! I can not wait. Wonder when they will make the WWW and my computer avalible directly through my brain? (Still a little scared about this one but would be cool if controlled correctly.)

Seems to me with a little work multiplexing 2 or more together(B&W versus color with R,G,and Blue lasers with a PC to focus the laser instead of the pen you've got a mid-air monitor screen or TV set. Add levels of lasers to emulate the gel levels in a hologram and we've got mid-air holograms - movie type - food for thought and perhaps a patent?

Use the pen as a baton and conduct a musical group with this! Great for orchestra pops concerts! Or for another musical application, come up with theramin software that you could control with it.

Check out the Cheoptics 360. The technology for holograms exists, even if it *is* in its infancy and takes up a building the size of a barn. Throw in this hologram emitter concept, and we might have something...

Add 3 or 4 light sensors on the edge of the disk and you could triangulate the image and use it as an input device as well.

This Might be good for displaying 3D images

This could be the first step in replacing the standard keyboard with a holographic projection. Just think you could carry a full computer around if you could replace the screen and keyboard with light. OLED's will replace the standard screen soon. Next this might become the standard user interface device. Just an interesting possibility.

what is this guy's name who came up with this?

By kaeel at 9:35 PM ON 08/29/08

It seems like it could very useful. Like doing lectures, even if you needed to have low light for it to work, we need that anyway with powerpoint.
