Is the Nintendo Wii too expensive for you? Well, you might be a cheapskate, but you can get a taste of motion-controlled gaming with this standalone Wii Sports knockoff called UltiMotion Swing Zone Sports, made by Jakks. Priced at just $80, the set includes an very tiny "console" (that's the white thing in back), a motion controller and five plastic snap-on accessories for the remote that correspond to the five games built into the console — basic versions of tennis, bowling, football, baseball and golf.
Standard A/V jacks let you hook up the Swing Zone to any TV (we're not exactly talking high-def here), and the controller has an accelerometer, just like a Wiimote, letting it detect a full range of motion. I got a chance to try it out and found myself really getting into Swing bowling (I didn't have time to try out the others). You can see a picture of my killer split after the jump. Swing Zone Sports should be available this fall.

Hi!
I purchased ULTIMOTION - Swing Zone Sports on Saturday, Dec. 20, 2008 and thought I’d give you my impressions.
I preface my comments knowing this game is mainly for kids 5 years and age through early teen years, although it is billed as a game everyone in the family can play.
The game does provide some light diversion, but has only short-term replay value.
The Super Nintendo-like graphics are near-ancient, but certainly good enough for the younger market. It doesn’t detract from the gameplay.
While the system does retain records for 4 of the 5 sports (why not tennis?), it really falls short because there are only two avatars available in each sport. What happens is after a few days, all ten slots are filled with the same avatar. The ability to create names for each player should have been a given. So no one knows who’s records are who’s. This is a huge error in design.
Also, as with the Nintendo Wii, the peripheral add-ons (tennis racket, bowling ball, etc.) add nothing to the game play experience. Without them, the price of the system could have been far less, or at the very least, more moderate.
BASEBALL
This was a huge disappointment. Every hit is an automatic home run; either that or you swing and miss. No challenge. Very little skill involved. No reason to play this game a second time. A wasted effort.
TENNIS
The only sport in the package without noticeable shortcomings. Plays well with a nice selection of shots. Yet the system won’t keep records/achievements.
BOWLING
Should have been the most popular game, but it has noticeable drawbacks. The player has no control over the speed of the throw. The ball rolls very, very slowly. Also, about every second ball toss, the system stops play to say “Too early” or “Too late.” This is thoroughly annoying. Instead of stopping play, just let the ball roll, and if it’s a bad toss, let the results speak for themselves.
GOLF
An interesting game, but the tiny dots bunched too closely together indicating where to hit the ball are not good indicators. Why aren’t we told how many yards are left to the hole? And why are we not given any indicators on the slope of the greens?
FOOTBALL
Interesting for a minute or two. But after that, there is no replay value.
Thank you for listening. I believe my comments are valid and hope you incorporate my suggestions in your next effort. Good concept though.
