Study shows consumers dumping cable TV service for online video, cellphones, gas

byebye_cabletv.jpg

It’s given me a great deal of pleasure to gleefully abandon my cable TV service, canning Time Warner for greener pastures such as crystal-clear broadcast HDTV, Apple TV, downloads and Vudu without suffering at all. The best news is, it looks like I’m not alone, according to a study by ad agency Mediaedge:cia. “An awful lot of this small sample are pulling the plug on cable television,” says Mediaedge:cia CEO Lee Doyle.

Historically, people with low incomes hang onto cable TV even when they’re nearly broke. Not any more. The study showed that peoples’ priorities have changed with gas, Internet connections and a cellphones ahead of cable TV service in the spend-o-rama pecking order. It’s not surprising, especially since there’s such a plethora of great content available elsewhere. At the same time, cable TV looks grainy compared to the pristine, less-compressed digital broadcast HDTV signal. Save your money — dump cable!

is their a way I could find out what HD channels I could get by using a HD antenna?

I like in a City of like 150,000 people....so I'm curious what I would get. I currently get like 40 HD channels....I aint gonna lie, I would kinda suck going from 40...to 4.

@MURC: Antennaweb can show you which digital channels are available in your area, and help you pick an antenna to help you receive them. Check it out at http://antennaweb.org/aw/welcome.aspx

Television shows and movies all are easily downloaded or watched online but what do you do when you want to watch football, baseball, soccer, hockey, golf, NASCAR...

When online video offers closed captioning, then I will dump my cable. So far, this (to may knowledge) has not happened.

thanks Charlie.

I checked it out...it turns out I would only be getting 6 digital channels....Which I'm not sure yet if that would do.

& ENONE - most of the things you mentioned would be available...you still get things Like ABC,NBC,CBS,FOX...and some others. Although you wouldn't get espn.....which for me, could be the deal breaker.

DNR - I assume your deaf...cause why else would you care about that? :/

When someone wants to front me $2,500 for a Sony Bravia, another $2000 for a new computer and wireless router, and $500 for a PS3/Blu-Ray player I'll consider giving up cable.
