New washing machine uses a single cup of water to clean clothes

washing_machine.jpgA new washing machine uses just a single cup of water to clean an entire load of clothes, saving a ton of both water and energy every time its used. The secret? Little plastic chips that it uses to absorb the dirt from your clothes. The water is heated up enough to dissolve the dirt, then the chips absorb it. The chips are removed at the end of the wash and can be reused up to 100 times.

The machine uses a mere 2% of the energy and water of a traditional machine, a difference that could save millions of gallons of water and countless amounts of energy each year if widespread. It's a pretty huge advancement, one that people should be clamoring to get into their homes as soon as it hits the market.

Another one of those I believe it when I see it products. Sounds very unlikely.

And what about the environmental impact of manufacturing and then disposing of those magic plastic chips?

The plastic chips can be recycled after they've been used up to a 100 times. Also Leeds University have released a press release regarding this...

what happens non dirt things in clothing, like sweat and chemicals?

By confuse at 5:20 PM ON 05/12/09

Yeah, what happens to the chips that get stuck in your pockets and pleats? Or clothes that get rolled up? You pull out a few of those per wash, pretty soon you need to replace a few. Then what? Are they individually numbered so you only replace the old ones, not the new ones? Pretty soon, you have to replace all of the chips, even ones you just put in.
