New tech allows cops to track perps rather than chase them

coptrack.jpgHigh-speed police chases are, obviously, dangerous. If they can be avoided, it's generally accepted that they should be. That's why the new technology by a company called StarChase is so promising: rather than chasing perps, cops can simply shoot their cars with a GPS transmitter and they'll know where they are at all times.

The system uses a laser to aim at the back of a car, firing a GPS receiver, wireless transmitter , and battery in a little slug that sticks to the outside of the vehicle. The cops can then track the car in question without needing to keep it in sight, making apprehending the criminal much easier and safer for everyone involved.

Yeah, it's great, until criminals catch on and either a)have someone else in the car knock the device off with a broomstick or something. or b)figure out a way to otherwise disable/jam the device. There are already radar detectors/jammers, I can't imagin GPS is too much harder to jam. Also, if theres a chance that spraying a car with pam might make this device not stick to the car, I'll pass.

Hundreds of highspeed car chases end in diasaster each year, often injuring innocent bystanders. How many of those reality shows show just that kind of thing happening? I know the highspeed chase sounds like fun but I'd really like to see something like this given a chance. I'd like to see two modes: sticky stuff "A" mode (apparently, illustrated) and a metal harpoon, high velocity "B" mode. Then drop back and track the perps from a half mile or mile away, just out of sight. Pop 'em when they stop at their ... lair! Best of luck, guys!
