London prepping fleet of hydrogen hybrid fuel cell cabs

HydrogenHybridTaxi.jpgWith the London Olympics a mere 4 years away, Brits are preparing for the huge influx of tourism and media attention that comes along with hosting the Olympic games. One of the things that they're doing is setting up a fleet of hydrogen hybrid fuel cell taxis to tote the imminent hoards around their fair city.

The fancy new cabs will be able to run all day without refueling, will have a top speed of 120 kilometers per hour, and will be able to stop faster than their gas-fueled counterparts. And while the fleet is being put into place for the Olympics, they'll obviously still be around afterwards, helping to significantly cut down the greenhouse gas output of London for years to come. Nice work, Brits.

So, what is the current status of making Hydrogen?

Can it be done without creating as much mess and expense as driving regular cars?

Another question for the science crowd:

I recall making hydrogen in school out of water, which was very simple. Then the teacher filled a balloon up with it, and blew it up.

What can't water be used, because I'm always hearing natural gas and so forth.

looks very nice. very eco friendly.

it has a very London/English feel to it. looks like Rolls Rois (if thats how its spelled).

As for the water thing, I remember seeing something about one of the entrants at that competition in Wash. DC with the solar panel houses had a hydrogen fuel cell generator for when the solar batteries ran out. The interesting thing about the generator was that it did use water. Actually, it reused its own water. It would separate the water molecules, use the hydrogen in the fuel cells, then take the water made in the reaction to splice hydrogen again. And the device was there at the competition, so I think its ready to go. We're probably just waiting on a business to do their thing.

What I'm wondering is, if all the car companies have both hydrogen and ethinal vehicles ready for the road, where is the refueling infostructure so we can start buying these freakin vehicles? The vehicles have been ready since 2000 (read that in a Discover magazine article that I still have). We're basically just waiting of the refueling stations. so again, where are they?

thanks to brits, nice work, wonderfull indeed.,its eco friendly....go,go,go...
