As Steve Jobs' keynote at the Worldwide Developers Conference droned on and on into its second hour, highlighting the virtues of various iPhone applications with silly names like Loopt and Enigmo, I started to doubt whether he was going to announce a new iPhone at all. Then it happened — with the words "Today we're announcing the iPhone 3G," Apple fans everywhere finally had cause to uncork the champagne.
But this announcement affects much more than those fans (as legion as they may be). Apple's pricing of the new iPhone ($199 for the 8GB model) and its schedule for a worldwide rollout (70 countries!) show just how grand Jobs' plans are: He wants nothing short of world domination of the cellphone market. And he just might get his wish, thanks to one key feature of his new toy. Find out what it is after the jump.
So why hasn't the iPhone conquered the world yet? After all, Safari is already on the iPhone. Well, it's getting there (it's only in six countries so far), but I also suspect the flack Apple took for the slow connection in the first wave of iPhone reviews hampered things. And y'know, it is slow. $400 is a lot to pay for a phone with a browser that makes dial-up look fast.
Are there alternatives that do mobile Web browsing for about as cheap? Sure. And there are plenty of cheaper, more functional portable music players (PMPs) than the iPod, but most everyone just wants an iPod. While the 3G phone market is more competitive and more mature than the PMP market was when the iPod was released, Apple's reputation as a choice maker of gadgets carries weight as well. Throw in the company's aggressive strategy of releasing the iPhone 3G in 70 countries, and app-filled touchscreens could replace white headphone cords as Apple's callsign for conquering yet another product category.

Has anyone seen an advertisement for this phone yet? Will Apple even feel the need to advertise for the first 3 months after release. Not with every fanboy blogging about it constantly. I guess all that free advertising is why this better phone is $400 cheaper than its predecessor, or did Apple just stick it to the fanboys?
By PATHOGEN at 8:03 PM ON 06/10/08
the iphone wont conquer the world. just because people want to get the "best" phone out there doesnt mean its typically the best functional phone. there are going to be more phones to come in the future that will be better than the ones today it all depends on technology.
By Zero at 3:44 AM ON 06/11/08
plus as long as its still locked in to only certain company's in its areas of distribution the iphone will never be end all be all.
Dear mr. jobs,
I like my ipod, id love a iphone but only if i could chose who my service is with.

Nice... but as others say give us choice of carrier... AT&T sucks, and the only reason didn't buy iphone before..
Do opposite of what you did with the touch, Give me a PHONE with WEB, with NO IPOD. for the business professional dont need a big hard drive no videos, movies, and music at work. I just want web access, and a phone! Or let the users BUILD their iphone with the features they want, just like a computer... start with an unheard of $99 Phone with web, then add apps, +$100 for ipod, and add other abilities and build on demand.

Ya there will be better Phones come out someday... can you guess what will be on the back of it? I can.
By outtie at 4:53 AM ON 06/11/08
I'll never get AT&T just to get an iphone.
If he REALLY wants to dominate the cell phone market, then he needs to dump AT&T. It doesn't even make sense to be exclusive to a single carrier. AT&T can't possibly be paying them more money than they would make by selling iphones from ALL carriers, and having more people downloading itunes, podcasts, ect from those carriers.
By dragonblack at 7:35 AM ON 06/11/08
an itouch 8gb for $200 thats a steal as they are $300 without the phone makes you wonder when the price will drop again like it did when the new nanos came out.
By earl lutz at 7:47 AM ON 06/11/08
Sorry folks.. Iphone will rules... its getting cheaper, its getting better... its got the hype.
and its a cool device.. You might as well GET one and you might as well get AT&T..
By Tom Reitz at 8:19 AM ON 06/11/08
The lowering of the price and the increase in speed makes this a no brainer for me as well. The iPhone will soon rule the earth. ALL HAIL iPHONE. Resistance is FUTILE.
By dragonfire10 at 8:22 AM ON 06/11/08
well you can get the unlocking program, and then you can use any GSM carrier, besides AT&T. Which is what I am going to do.
By TonyG at 8:50 AM ON 06/11/08
From my understanding of using unlocking programs though, you lose some of the functionality (ie. MMS messaging) of the phone. Is this correct?
By MRC53 at 9:27 AM ON 06/11/08
My son bought an I-Phone and ninety percent of the time the phone doesn't work. He has replaced the phone at least four times and none of them work. I doubt that the new I-Phone will be any better.

It's always embarassing to read articles like this, where the USA thinks they can go out and be the first to conquer the world, or some self-serving subset thereof. Instead of parrotting Jobs' view of the market, it would be prudent for the author to do a little research.

I was with Cingular about a year before AT&T bought them out (merged, whatever you want to call it) The services with Cingular was amazing. Once AT&T bought them, the service did go down the tube, but I have to say, it has become better. I'd say about 95% there compared to Cingular of old. I rarely get dropped calls, and only from time to time do I get network busy messages. I live in the DC area and frankly between the big 3 (verizon, at&t and t-mobile) I'd go with AT&T. Not because I like them, but because they have the best service. My sister lives in VA and t-mobile service is horrible. Verizon has great signal and probably the least dropped calls, but their customer service is awful.

I kinda wonder about something. Apple lists the battery life as 300 hours (500?) for standby, and 5 to 6 hours for browsing with 3G. I have a phone that also does 3G and web browsing, but the problem is, since I use it with Exchange and AIM, it is always connected to the web. In other words, it has an always-on 3D/EDGE connection, which means it lasts at most 8 hours before I have to plug it in, or a full work day (battery is getting old btw). Would the iPhone suffer from the same shortcoming, where your Exchange Push Mail and possible IM connection will keep the phone working for at most 6 hours, unless you forgo the Push part of Exchange, and only turn on the web to browse and sync e-mails?

Your a "cocky" lot..... Now that all you naysayers' can (hopefully) afford this phone you should try it. I doubt you'll complain. Your all probably just jealous that your RAZR or Blue Berry - whatever you call it - black berry... whatever.... Is not cool since the iPhone came out. Now you can stop crying and communicate with your EXCHANGE servers , Windows Missed-it, oh I mean Vista or whatever else it is that you do n' use. I'm a mac and your not!

Your all probably just jealous that your RAZR or BlueBerry/Blackberry (whatever its called) is not cool. Now you can stop all of the crying and communicate with your MS Exchange servers in style. Oh yeah- you can finally afford it too! Hurray! I'm a mac and your not!

I don't know what kind you have but I have a blackjack2 with exchange and mine lasts for several days before I have to charge it. One thing to know about 3G. Not all places will provide 3G. When I go out of a major city, I get Edge or G which still works, but is not as fast. ATT only provides 3G in heavy populated areas. You might also have problems getting a signal at all if you are in a more rural area. the solution for that is to get a mobile antenna in your home.

Sorry for the dual posting. The later is version 2.0. Funny enough I posted this from my friends PC (while he is trying my iPhone) and it submitted it twice. Go Figure.

The question is how OPEN will the phone be for developers to make apps for it? I'd switch in a minute if I could easily port some of my software over to it. The iPhone already plays video, so my tutorials play fine - but I have lots of other mobile apps that I need too.
By Andy at 12:00 PM ON 06/11/08
Nokia needs to get into the touch screen biz. Once that happens good-bye apple. I can tether my nokia to my Mac laptop and use it as a modem. iPhone I can not. I can send MMS of that UFO to other friends with cell phones and e-mail. iPhone only e-mail. Apple changed the hardware, but is still lacking on software. Where is my PTT. Video Recorder, ... the list goes on (see youtube.com for more comparisons)
By Polly at 1:03 PM ON 06/11/08
Yes, it's a smart phone. It plays music, it surfs the web, it takes pictures, it has a touch surface. What sets this apart from all the other smartphones that do the same thing? Well that's simple: It was released by Apple, which automatically makes it superior. Right? Right? His Jobsness uses one, so that means everyone in the world will have one simply for the cool points. Right? Anyone who doesn't have one is a fool and by default, not cool. Right?
Wrong. Sadly DVice has bought into the hype. Whomever wrote this article is probably also writing for the the apple fansite Gizmodo.

If it can operate on any of Vodafones worldwide network excellent, if it has a camera wonderful, if it also has video calling & capture like my Samsung fantastic .... then you've got a sale here though I'll as the obvious why you didn't include a 20GB or 60GB of memory like the ipod:-)

What about business apps like MS-Word OR Excel? I use them on my TREO 650 & they are a must have for me. The other stuff is gravy... Anyone know? What about Cut & Paste between apps? My TREO can do that too...

Seeing as how 8 minutes separate the two postings and they have different txt, blaming the PC is a little silly. It's called Operator Error.
By Cedric at 4:14 PM ON 06/11/08
Had to add this re: 'operator error' really the only errors I know are, hardware, software and 'meatware' and I agree with the TREO user as my other phone an APACHE with a different carrier was business focused ... it just wasn't cool like the iphone.

Well, this one for $199 is good, and I guess other multimedia phones out there eill also drop their prices, that will bee good too.

I've never had an Ipod. I use the Creative Zen.
I've never had an iphone, and right now no interest. The only reason I even have a blackberry, is because work gives me one.
Yes, one of the main reasons why I never bothered with an iphone is AT&T. I worked contract for them. My Nextel/Sprint AND my Verizon phones BOTH have better reception.
I'll admit Apple has some good innovations though the ipod was FAR from the first-ever mp3-player. I think Creative had it with the Rio or Nomad first in the US at least.
Rather like Microsoft, I just don't trust Apple. If for different reasons.

So.....the i-phone is now $199.00 and it has all the bells and whistles that everyone will drool over and hope to buy....my question is, when will i-phone be open to those who want pay as you go? as far as i know its a closed door to us who has pay as you go, so till that door becomes open, i am not holding my breath.....

This phone will ABSOLUTELY take over the world! I currently use my iphone to access my website and channel on YouTube to answer comments, post video responses, to show others my videos.. to answer my multiple email accounts, etc... And all of that is through GPRS!!! Once this 3G one comes out it will make the whole experience that much better!
I am probably unique in my uses.. but I'm sure most of us that have simply used it for email and the occasional Google search or maps search know that the experience is so much better and user friendly than on any other phone.
Anyway.. just wanted to put my 2 cents in (actually.. I wonder why it's not 3 cents or 1 cent???.. Hmm.. must research that!)

Take over the world!? Yeah right!
The service sucks!
The browser is stolen (Opera Mini)!
The design is stolen (LG Prada)!
Time gave this stolen product “Invention of the Year” over a device to help amputees walk up-right and normal.
Apple fan-boys need to get laid and get a life!
