Apple intros MobileMe, letting you access email, calendar and contacts anywhere

apple_mobileme.jpg

In a grandiose act of me-too catch-up to Google, Apple today announced a suite of software that would have been revolutionary … if it had been announced in 2003. Matching Google app-for-app is MobileMe, letting users log into a website with a billion-dollar URL: me.com, and access their email, address book and calendar, all online and costing "only" $99 a year.

On the plus side, there is the ability to store data up there on the cloud in the form of 20GB of iDisk space, but beyond that, it looks to me like Google has already been there and done that long ago with its free Gmail (with contacts) and Calendar applications. Wonder if meh.com is taken?

I think the thing that they were trying to impress is that all of your PIM and communications information is kept in the cloud and is sent dynamically to all of your devices instantly. So a trouble free wireless(cellular and WiFi) ActiveSync on steroids. That is where the value is. Oh, and you can access it through the internet and be presented with Web 2.0 apps that are almost exactly like Apple's desktop apps. Sounds good to me.
