The Antro Solo gas-electric hybrid is an interesting blend of space age chic and primitive technologies. It's got an array of solar panels along the top of the vehicle to power it's electric motor, and yet both passengers in the three-seater also have a pair of pedals in front of them, which they can use to help give the motor a boost — or keep the car gas efficient on a gray day. The interior cabin is curious, as well, as it sits both passengers on either side of the driver, with the driver taking the center seat.
Quirky or not, the Antro Solo performs: it's light, carbon fiber chassis keeps it's weight down at 600 pounds, and it can zip along at over 80 mph while getting a whopping 150 mpg. That means you could drive from New York City to Los Angeles on a little less than 19 gallons of gas. It stores its solar energy in batteries to keep the car juiced, though, so it'll probably serve you better on short runs. If you import one from its native Budapest, Hungary, that is. The vehicle is a prototype right now, but its developers expect it to hit the road in 2012 for the not-so-hybrid price of $18,000.

LOL, it looks like a computer mouse.

wont come to the US. PERIOD.
this thing would never pass safety standards here. I mean, it weights 600 lbs for starters.
I'm sure in developing countries is will sell, but not in countries like US/Canada/Europe.

150 miles per gallon is really impressive.
By i1patrick at 8:48 AM ON 06/25/08
The US needs to remove the hypocrisy from our safety standards. We ALREADY allow vehicles much lighter than 600lbs on the roads. They're called motorcycles. Just because a light-weight vehicle has more than two wheels does not mean its less safe.

To be successfull in the US Market, the driver's seat would have to be on the left of the car. Can you see a 250 lb 6foot tall man huffing and puffing into the middle seat? If you make very many entries and exits you'd see my point. I can't wait to see the car up close.

This hybrid is wrong because most cars on the road carry only the driver with no passengers. A center driver looks efficient, but isn't practical. So make a hybrid with just two seats. It will be lighter, less wider, and cheaper. If you need to carry more than two people, there are plenty of other hybrids. Better yet, offer a single driver version for those who travel alone.

any mother with two will tell you she doesn't want to be in the middle - even with such great mileage!
By mjkelleher at 10:39 AM ON 06/26/08
I agree with Raymondjram that most drivers in the US drive alone. Why not make it a two seater with pedals for both the driver and the passenger?
By Solinbeb at 12:00 PM ON 06/26/08
I wonder how a 600lb car with a 150 pound passenger would do with a 50 mph cross wind during tornado season.
By arktek at 3:03 PM ON 06/26/08
lol @ SOLINBEB
i still dont understand why companies make nearly all of the "useful" hybrids look completely ridiculous... i dont know about any of you guys but i would never buy this car, unless maybe it got like 1000 MPG =/

How do the wipers work on this car? My experience with large glazed surfaces predict not only trouble seeing in the rain, but the heat gain, and keeping such a large amount of glazing intact. If this it is acyrilic, good luck on keeping if from cracking, if it is Lexan, it should be treated with a hard coat. Also I agree the center seat is not for the real world, nor is the pedaling actually.

Why, with all those people taking photos of the interior, are there no photos of what the inside really looks like?

I am very impressed with how they managed to get the weight down so low and have a good healthy top speed. I have a friend who bought a Honda Insight several years ago to use as a good platform for a fully electric car. Last time I saw the car he had just replaced the battery pack with a dozen or so Dewalt 36V Lithium batteries and dropped over 700# and managed to get even more range out of it.
With the high cost of diesel fuel these days that would be a great area of tech development to invest in to make a viable electric truck with a solar panel covered trailer and recovery generator for braking. that's what we need when truckers are shelling out $1k a week on fuel.

Unfortunatly every car company sacrifices aerodynamics for looks. Aero is THE most important aspect of getting a car into the 100 plus range. Any form of extraneous curves or accoutrements will add substantial drag. Its all about being slippery to the wind, not easy on the eyes

I'm always amused how Americans critise advanced concepts based on their needs as if theirs was the only market.
There's a whole world out there not worrying about safety and bundling up in a three ton monster vehicle.
I might remind all that America built vehicles not that many years ago without crash safety and still does in the form of ATV's, motorcycles etc. Also nobody ever questions the crash safety of light aircraft, commercial aircraft, microlites, bicycles, skates, skydiving, helicopters, bungy jumping,etc.etc.

This car looks alright. But look at the big flaps of the doors used to enter and exit the car - I mean - how on earth are you supposed to jump in and out of the car when you are in a single garage without scratching the panels? The aerodynamics of the car do not look as good as they could be, which means the car is built more for looks. But it only takes one small scratch on the surface for people to start disliking the car. What about a breakdown? People will not know the first thing about this modern technology, so they will be stuck on the side of the road for a while. One last thing - it will be a lovely target for vandals!
