A $24,000 record player? The Acutus Reference ain't your daddy's turntable

acutus_reference_3.jpg

An interesting thing is happening in music business. CD sales are down (40% since 2000, according to the RIAA), but sales of vinyl records (remember those?) are up big-time, especially in the high-end market. That might explain the Acutus Reference turntable — the $24,000 record player claims to be the best there is.

The Acutus Reference is an upgrade from an older model with a new power supply and better suspension. The platter alone weighs 22 pounds and was completely rebuilt to minimize vibration and noise. Of course, one would expect it to be better than the previous Reference — that one only cost a paltry $14,000. If you’re interested in buying one, know this: the tonearm is sold separately.

There's definitely an abundance of these high-end turntables being released. Some other interesting ones are the Montegiro Lusso, and the EAR Disc Master.
