Samsung shows off sexy OLED laptop, coming in 2009?

080516_sdi.jpg

We don’t usually follow what all the other blogs are doing, but in the case of this Samsung OLED laptop prototype, there’s good reason why everyone’s jaws seem to be dropping. First of all, there’s that 12.1-inch 1280x768 OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display — new screen tech that was flaunted by Sony and others at the past couple of CES shows — looking so sharp and contrasty that it’s hard to believe you’re looking at mere video.

Then there’s the sporty design, with those snazzy red accents setting off the piano-black case. Add to that the mystery of that panel (or whatever that is) behind this beauteous bauble, and you have a recipe for heavy anticipation. We’re not too impressed with its stationary touch-sensitive keyboard, even though it is pretty high-tech. Nicer to have tactile typing feedback, wethinks.

Still, the most exciting aspect of this tease: Samsung’s talking 2009 for a release date of even bigger 15.4-inch OLED screens on laptops, so this 12.1-incher might be on its way even sooner. The catch, as with all OLED tech right now, is the outlandish price penalty of such razor-thin, ultra-sharp screens. For instance, Sony’s 11-inch XEL-1 OLED TV is currently selling for $2500, and there are doubts about its longevity, too. We’ll gawk now, but wait a while to buy.

Pretty sweet! but I'm afraid we're never going to use equipment like in Star Trek: The Next Generation, if we keep asking for tactile typing feedback.

I'm waiting for the public to be offered systems like they show on the CSI shows that are totally touch and use -- no keyboards at all.

As a computer scientist, the idea of limited (or no) moving parts is appealing - touch screens and voice command with a solid state keyboard as a secondary input, SSDs vs. spinning discs. Look at the Isaac CARET documents for some that never wears out.

SSD HD + OLED hard drive=super thin laptop. Expect to see less pricier laptops with both in 2010-2011.

Unfortunately it will only be available with Vista or Linux.

SSD HD's are running out of steam fast. They're too slow. DDR HD's look more promising with all the benefits of SSD HD's but with faster find/access times.

If you need some form of tactile feedback as an indicator that the keypress was completed, just add a small, thin piezoelectric chip below each key. After the key is touched, the computer will activate the chip and make it vibrate at an low frequency audio level. You get both audio and tactile feedback with no mechanical parts, and keep it all solid state. The best of both worlds!

"the mystery of that panel (or whatever that is) behind this beauteous bauble"
Looks like it's just the top part of the case - used to support the screen perhaps to save space on hinges.

1st. Do we really need this, it's a beautiful peice of tech art but it still doesn't fit in my pocket.

2nd. I hope it comes with way more than 640k of RAM cause Vista really needs more like 640TB eh Bill.

3rd. Congratz David Cook your now a rock idol.

Oh and BTW Samsung in my opinion makes the best looking LCD TV's with little or no black lines.

It is not tactile feedback that people really demand, it is a touch panel that works as well a a tactile keypad. Once they have a touch screen with the response time and reliability of not missing a key with fast fingers, the tactile need will go away and the flat touch panel craze will begin. The Apple Iphone is a perfect example. How many people are cying for tactile feedback on their Iphone. The answer is not blowing in the wind, the answer my friend is NONE. Bigger OLED displays can't get here fast enough.
