Looking stylish would probably be the least of your worries during a terrorist attack, but then again you're not Paris Hilton. Trendsetters like her might eschew duct tape and Cipro for the Urban Security Suit. Designed by Tim Smit, the USS is made of neoprene, though it's also lined with body-molded Kevlar to ensure you can stop bullets while turning heads. The gas mask is a nice touch, though I'm not sure about those olive straps — I think we can do better, Tim. But if the ever goes into production, it's sure to be an essential accessory of panic rooms from Beverly Hills to Soho.

Lot of good the mask will do for chem attacks with the ripped jeans and no gloves. Only thing this crap is good for is rioting. Should stop rubber bullets and tear gas.
By Erebua at 3:15 PM ON 04/28/08
Well, at least we will be able to identify those that should go up against the wall first...
By Erudite at 1:47 PM ON 04/29/08
Please, not only will this not work in a chemical attack, but I seriously doubt it will help much in a rain of bullets (even rubber ones) if the person got hit on the legs. But won't you look stylish thrashing about in pain...

Just need some rubber-bullet proof long-johns under those jeans. Might not work for a chem attack, but this is next step in bird-flu safety. Imagine how creepy the streets would be with thousands of these roaming about . . .

I dont think the jet set would be stupid enough to wear one of these for the real deal, to start with kevlar lining isnt going to prevent fractures and bruises by the impact of true bullets (that's why cop vests come with plates). I love America, always selling crap to its own ppl and making it look good :-)
By bigbrigand at 10:12 AM ON 04/30/08
Sandokan - what police department wears body armor with plates? All of the law enforcement agencies in my area are wearing standard Kevlar body armor without bullet resistant plates. I'd like to know because I need to stay away from where you live.

My info is a decade or so old (and my memory may be faded) but I thought most police used Class II+ body armor which (IIRC) has a plate in the chest. Tac Teams usually wear Class III or IV body armor which definitely includes plates (but tends to have a gap under the arm which leaves their vitals a lot more vulnerable than they'd like).
By deemon328 at 12:52 PM ON 04/30/08
There's way more practical ways to use this tech other than selling it to the jet set crowd. This type of performance wear would be great at preventing puncture wounds in the work environment. Being saved from injury by flying metal and wood fragments in fabrication shops is the real market for this kind of thing.

Big flaw. Most terrorist attacks are bombings, not chemical. All this would manage to do is melt onto your body.
By coonass at 2:45 PM ON 04/30/08
gas mask is retro, probably won't stop low molecular weight threat CBR agents, those lenses give you a crappy field of view. Also would like to see some femoral and groin protection, it's not asking too much for shin greaves, either.
By coonass at 2:50 PM ON 04/30/08
Also, the cover garment doesn't look impermeable, which would be bad, bad news in the case of nerve agents/vesicants/urticants/mask breaking agents that act on skin contact.
By Beedo at 4:43 PM ON 04/30/08
All your criticisms of the flaws of this suit are pretty darn good. But the point of it was to let people like Paris Hilton and Victoria Beckham buy these, let them THINK they're safe, and when the attack comes, they weed themselves out of the population by opting for the useless "fashionable" version instead of the working one. Thanks for spoiling THAT plan, guys! ;)

Hell even if it stops a bullet it won't stop the pain from the bullet, A round hits you with the body armor we have now it breaks a rib or at the very least leaves a deep deep tissue bruise so this is gonna hurt a lot more, but you won't die and I think thats the point. I hate these moronic designers, why add a gas mask ? Cuz he/she wants to seem cool or something stupid like that. A practical design would be more impressive.

Whatever homie, that Jacket looks HOT! now if they can just make a light one without all the kevlar it'd be the hottest lookin clothing accessory for spring. Heck I've been waiting for more futuristic looking clothing. I'm tired of all this lookin back fashion crap.
And it's called the URBAN Security Suit, not the Terrorist Prevention security suit (I'm pretty sure that mask is for dramatic purposes i doubt anyone would wear it or have it hanging on them). I'm worried about the thugs that live down the street. And I know those ignorant fools don't read articles from websites like this. I'd be one less "innocent bystander" and they'll just think i'm some twit with bad fashion sense. i'd sooner let them think that than take a bullet.

OKAY!!!
First off looks dope, can I get two. Secondly for all of you suckers trying to prove your infinite knowledge of bullet and chem stopping materials.
I'm damn sure this is a bit more comfortable that your run of the mill bullet proof vest, and its a garment one could actually wear on a day to day basis.
Along that same line of thought, it's probably gonna stop more harmful projectiles than your faded JC Penny's sports coat I always see you in on the A train on your way to wall St.

Personally I dislike all the white, however I do like the cut, and think in maybe black and red would go well with a Rivethead look. For protection, I'll stick with my millitary grade flak jacket or my 14th Century plate armour (very few guns in the uk, mostly knives and blunt instruments, which plate and chainmail is perfect for stopping, more so than modern materials).
By DaJoker at 1:10 AM ON 07/18/08
Your all a bunch of kids, obviously it wasn't really meant to stop bullets or chemical warfare, it just looks really cool. Who would buy body armor from a businessman anyway? What does he know about bulletproof vests and other stuff? Nothing, but he does know how to make one pretty badass sweater. But seriously, all of you are saying the same thing, maybe you guys should discover the outside world.

Anyone think this urban "suit" is ever going to retail?
By SOVIETREUNION at 9:21 PM ON 02/12/09
It's stab proof though... and you're not gonna get pwnt if they use teargas or w/e, only a douche would run into gun fire wearing that though, looks good and is going to do a hell of a lot more protection wise then my merino hoodie.
By Azya at 9:48 PM ON 02/06/10
Seriously, all you guys complaining about how it doesn't give that good protection or about bullet protection need to shut up.
Sure, it might give you bruises and break a rib or two if you get shot, but then at least your not dead. Idiots. Also, it would be very useful against knives and beating sticks and whatnot.
And stop complaining about no leg protection. The 'suit' is just the hoodie part, not anything else.
But I must ask two questions: where can i get one, and does it come in black?
