Like melon balls wrapped in prosciutto, playing an iPod through such a vacuum-tube amplifier sounds like a ludicrous combination until you actually try it. Perhaps it has something to do with the warm sound of the aged technology of tube amps — which can smooth out the tendency for MP3 files to sound a little harsh — but there's no doubt that a tube-based iPod dock and a pair of good speakers can deliver pretty decent sound.
Far from being one company's crazy idea, tube amps designed for iPods have multiplied in recent years. From the elaborate to the sexy to the gigantic, there are now a bunch of ways you can wrap your iPod in thermionic tubiness. Follow the Continue jump to check out a few of our favorites.

I watched item #2 being built from the ground up. Went to the lumber store with the crafter of this fine dock (my boyfriend) and even saw pictures of it when it was still in clamps on his pool table. The sound is phenomenal.

One wonders if some of the folks designing some of this gear had any intention whatsoever of creating a usable, practical, high quality playback device. A lot of it looks like simple opportunism targeting those who confuse quaint with quality.

Nice article, I have a Fatman iTube Carbon edition myself and its great. The following website is a good resource for people who are interested in tube amps. It has reviews of some of the above amplifiers as well as others. Here's the link for those who are interested: www.tubeamplifierreviews.com

I bought the little Gakken Vacuum Tube Amplifier kit, myself. Although it's listed as a kit, there's no soldering involved. It only requires a screwdriver (which is even included). Japanese-only instructions, but there are enough detailed diagrams that it's pretty easy to assemble anyways.
I've been using mine as a sound system for my Mac Mini. The sound is "quaint" with the little horns. I hooked mine up to a pair of old Realistic full-range drivers, which made for some improvement. It's loud enough. 100mw/channel is easily enough for a bedroom or office. But, I wish it had come with a detailed schematic, or better yet, as a point-to-point wired kit. The bass response is definitely lacking, and I'm sure it's just a matter of changing the values of the resistors and capacitors at the inputs to the 1B2 tubes (1st stage) to improve things a little bit.
Still, all said and done, a lot of fun for not much coin.
