Pranksters All: a look at the tech world on this Day of Fools

NASA-Dextre-the-Magnificent.jpg

NASA posted up some harrowing news to go along with their daily photo:

In a surprising and potentially troubling request, the new space station robot known as Dextre demanded that astronauts refer to it in the future as "Dextre the Magnificent." Brandishing power tools that would make any handyperson blush, the mobile servicing system thanked humans for creating it and promised a glorious future where humans would retain an important role in the new robot order.

Were you already on your hands and knees, worshiping your computer in case it came to life? Sure, we won't tell anyone. Click Continue to check out where else on this here Internet you may have been played for a fool.

Mr-T-at-Gizmodo.jpg

The lads and ladies over at Gizmodo have been pityin' fools all day long, integrating Mr. T into almost every April 1st post. So far Mr. T has brought a kid out of a coma, acted a bit pervy, and even exposed his tender side. He even has his very own gadget — must make momma proud. Similarly, Giz's sister site, Kotaku, went crazy for cake.

Engadget-Mobile-Logo.jpg

Visitors to Engadget may have noticed the site's looking a little pink. Magenta to be exact, which is used in the Engadget Mobile logo. It's also used for the "T" in T-Mobile, which is owned by Deutsche Telekom, and the company asked Engadget the day before April Fool's Day to stop using the same shade of magenta. In response, Engadget and several supporting sites donned a new shade of pink for April 1st.

ThinkGeek unleashed a whole host of new products today, but if you tried to buy any of them you'd get hit with a page that says "Ha! Gotcha! Happy April Fools Day, silly monkey!" (Except maybe the NSA shirt. We went so far as to add $20 to our cart and it was free as promised). ThinkGeek really went all out this year, filling not only the main page with gags like a taser/camcorder combo that uploads straight to YouTube, Spazztroids caffeinated cereal and a USB pregnancy test — the team also made their own video game. Take a look at Super Pii Pii Brothers, a game which provides a "virtual peeing experience" on the Nintendo Wii:

As if that wasn't enough, the sidebar is packed with even more clever goodies, including a printer that immediately shreds your printouts, the PC EZ-Bake Oven and an alarm clock that donates to a charity you hate every time you hit snooze.

Xbox-360-Wireless-Helmet.jpg

Microsoft kept the spirit of the day alive with four big Spring announcements. Xbox owners could really get their head in the game with the wireless control helmet shown above, complete with a Flex-Plasma In-Sight display, or take the online action to the living room table with the Xbox LIVE Board Game. Bored of the way your Xbox looks? They also announced the Vintage Edition 360, which is covered in wood, and the Recon Edition, which comes in a weatherproof rubber case and has passive sonar.

Google-Custom-Time.jpg

A company which always enjoys the holidays, Google came out with Gmail Custom Time and Virgle, the first permanent colony on Mars. Custom Time allows users to specify when they sent their email, even sometime in the past. The Virgle colony is a startup between Virgin founder Richard Branson and Google's leaders to lead users to a better tomorrow — in space!

Happy-April-Fools-from-DVICE.jpg
Well, I guess it's time for us to fess up, too. You may have noticed this little gem on the site today. It was a little joke Daily Candy and DVICE cooked up together. Sorry to be the one to break it to you, but if you wanted to get your hands on a box of Famous Flakes, you're out of luck!

More April Fool's humor cropped up in the shape of a $150 PlayStation 3 that's Blu-Ray free, a VoIP handset for the Nintendo Wii, and even over at YouTube, where every featured video saw you Rick Roll'd by the staff. Or maybe you were caught off guard by this Wii-driven car, the sight of Altair from Assassin's Creed rolling around in Metal Gear Solid 4, or the new Tauren Marines in Starcraft 2.

Any other April Fool's Day pranks catch you unawares today? Let us know in the comments below.
