PETA offering $1 million for lab-created meat
Would vegetarians still refuse to eat meat if that meat came from a test tube rather than the carcass of a dead cow? Apparently, not, as PETA is offering up $1 million to the first scientist who can create commercially viable meat in a lab.
It'd be a pretty huge step if they were able to create meat that tastes indistinguishable from the real thing. Methane from gassy cows is a big part of our ozone problem, and all the grain that goes to feed them could be used to feed hungry people instead. It would be huge. Also, PETA would stop being whiny and annoying, which is another big plus. Bring on the test tube burgers!

Eat PETA, and have a Spotted Owl for a snak.

I think that's the most logical and progressive thing I've ever heard from them.
I'd be the first in line to eat some. I used to be a veg but realized that it's bad for your health. This would solve it all.

methane is hurting the ozone....I've heard before, but it doesn't mean I believe it. before cows farting is was hair spray cans.....I'm sure in the future once we are all eating beef grown in a lab, it will be something wlse thats "destroying our ozone layer".
I prefer my meat, the real thing. I'm sure Peta hates the fact that I have a freezer full of the deer I killed last year.
I think peta should just STFU and mind their own business....oh wait, tey think everybodies business IS Their business.

Murc,
I tend to view the "green" movement, and all related things as a form of marketing. We live in an extreme capitalistic envirnoment and creating fear/anxiety/guilt is a huge way to make money.

Just because the author of the article is an idiot doesn't mean you guys have to be ones..
What he meant to say was not Ozone, but Global warming, which is a completely seperate problem. the Ozone problem is NOT A problem anymore since we solved it earlier this century.
Yes, look it up. No more ozone problem.
Global warming however - much bigger issue.

This is one of the best things PETA could do. Most of the comment here show a lack of knowledge about the impact of 6,000,000,000 people on one planet - all wanting to live well, long, and healthy. Eating dear is great too, if you are somewhere they occur. Way too many deer - eat more deer. Of course the prions you get from their chronic wasting disease may rot your brain, but these are the risks we take.
The green movement is one of the most important and rational movements ever - and I hope it continues forever.

Re: Green Movement
It's a great idea, and some companies support it whole-heartedly and honestly. Most companies use it as a marketing scheme. Heck, some companies are labeling "salt" as organic. Salt. I don't care if the refining process uses all-natural ingredients and they saved a dolphin, there is no way that NaCl can ever be classified as "organic."
If I had a way to monetarily support the production of meat vats, I'd do it. Not only will it free up the grain that the cows are eating now, we'd be able to make much more of it in a much smaller area. No waste products like bones. No chance of getting some BSE in there, since there's no brain tissue anywhere near the vats. We'd be able to use the grazing land for more crops and possibly be able to support an entire country on what we can grow, not to mention creating more jobs (both in the science labs and in the fields). But no. Most people won't support this because it's either "icky" or "won't be like real meat."

There is more methane released in the atmosphere by decomposing plant matter than anything else in the world. Yes, sadly little bacteria fart methane as they eat plant matter and this happens wherever plants grow, die then grow again. This thing about cattle-methane-earth-atmosphere-destroying is pure bullshit. No pun intended. I really think being a vegetarian kills brain cells. Think about all the stem-cell research and fuel that will have to be burned just to create a test-tube steak. But then again, if that wonderful 18oz prime rib I had a few weeks ago can be cloned over and over, I would be in heaven.

PETA's goals have nothing to do with the environment. PETA's only goal is "Don't harm animals". You tree hugging, propoganda proliferating fools should at least sort your issues out.
By lionelpcn at 6:17 AM ON 07/29/08
This is the most interesting commentary I've ever seen anywhere. Who the hell is PETA? Change one letter and we've got FETA! Speaking of which. So, if we no longer need cattle for meat, we'll definetaly still need those Farting cows for milk. Unless that's grown too.
By mahesh at 9:05 AM ON 10/14/08
why would somebody who doesnt want to eat meat eat artificial meat. but PETA cares about animals.
By FivePointPisces at 3:16 AM ON 12/10/08
Wow, I stumbled onto this by accident and is by far one of the most ridiculous blogs and articles Ive read. I'm veggie because of the inhumane treatment of animals, the health benefits of not consuming meat, the fact that we are scavenger animals that no long need to consume animal product because of the wonders of technology and a global market, the waste cause from animal production, the environment, and so many other reasons. Even if PETA finds a test tube meat product I highly doubt I'd ever eat it. Oh and for the guy that says the methane production from ridiculously overly produced beef production is similar to the breakdown of plant product in nature, no it's not the same because that has a natural balance where the over production of beef on this planet produces more methane then would naturally occur in nature because we force over-production of the animal.
And now, I'm out KIDS
