We’ve seen plenty of fat-measuring devices, but this Overall Health Balance Scale from Japan’s National Electric takes that fitness feedback idea a whole lot further. This as-yet-unreleased instrument helps you avoid metabolic syndrome, that dread combination of symptoms that shows up as obesity, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and even diabetes.

It’s hard to believe all the things it measures, including weight and BMI, the amount of fat under your skin, organ fat, how muscular you are, and your metabolic rate. After it’s taken all those readings, it adds insult to injury, telling you just how out of shape you are for your age on a scale of 1 to 5.

If you have a potbelly, you can even pull the screen up from its footpad and hold it right in front of you. Or, place its sensor over problem areas of your body and see just how fat, for example, that butt is. It'll even measure the thickness of your flab down to the millimeter. Too much information.
