Audi Snook, the one-wheeled car with a brain

audi-snook-front.jpg

Get out of the way, everybody! Here comes the one-wheeled Audi Snook. Maybe this auto-stabilized monowheel design concept isn’t such a bad idea, though, because it won German student Tilmann Schlootz a Michelin Challenge Design Award 2008 at this year’s Detroit Auto Show.

How the heck does this lightbulb-shaped vehicle with a trackball wheel underneath stay upright? “Agility through instability, controlled by artificial intelligence — that is my formal issue,” answers designer Schlootz. Looks like a carnival ride to us. Let’s hope that artificial intelligence does the driving, too.

Sounds like just about any 8 year old with a vocabulary can work for Audi. Makes my A6 seem rather unimportant. hrumph.

looks like someone was watching irobot and saw the car with balls for wheels that work how this one ball wheel will suposedly and took it to the extreme. il still prefer something with at lest 2 or 3 wheels to one... just doesnt seem to add up or look that great of an idea.

It's a cool idea, but i don't think the general population is going to be ready for this quite yet. Maybe you could put the wheel design towards something else. it would make parallel parking a lot easier.

A one-wheel car is good for in city travel and parking. Use it to get to a train or bus stop.
incert debit/credit card/Monthly pass card to start vehicle. On-screen map lets driver highlight a destination. push "GO" button.takes you to that location in the city.

I like the idea but find the mechanics to drive the wheel a bit complicated. They could use electromagnetism to power the wheel and to make the ride softer for you would be driving on a cushion of air. To get drive time, one can use your cell phone which will be debted as you drive.
