The VereFlu is a portable flu detector that's no bigger than one of your fingernails. It's built around STMicroelectronics’ In-Check lab-on-chip platform, and with just a single sampling it can tell the difference amongst Influenza A and B viruses, such as the Avian Flu.
So it's not the most expansive scanner out there, but its size would allow it to be installed all over, allowing researchers to get a better idea of how the air quality is in certain places. Just like everyone else living on the East Coast, I didn't need the VereFlu to know I was sick with a bad flu not too long ago. The preventive measures the VereFlu may enable are welcome indeed.
