Stick an extra room on the outside of your building

house-cube.jpgLiving in a big city is great for a number of reasons, but unless you're totally loaded, you generally need to make some sacrifices on living space. Especially in places like Manhattan, space is a premium. But what about that free air out your window? What if you could use some of that?

That's the idea behind the "Backpack House," a compartment that juts off your existing apartment to give you and additional room. Is it insane? Yes. Do I want one? Yes, yes I do. Connecting via steel cables on the roof or side of the building, it sure looks precarious, but you've gotta assume someone who knows what they're doing will install it, preventing your bedroom from falling three stories in the middle of the night. Who wants to be the first on their block to get one?

I assume you'd need some sort of authorization to 'build' this anyway, right? The authorities would probably want to make sure you're not going to drop on any passer-by's head.

Plus, you don't own any of the area outside your window. That wall is there for a reason, thats where you're property ends. You can't just build out over the street since thats government properly, so i doubt anything like this would be slightly legal
