Muxtape: Way too cool and simple to survive

muxtape.jpgOne of my favorite games when I was a digital music reporter in the '90s was guessing how long a new Web music service could survive before the recording industry suits shut it down like a bad habit. For Muxtape, a new music streaming app that debuted on the Web this week, I'm guessing T minus 7 days. Muxtape takes a cool, old-school concept – the mixtape
– and puts a Web spin on it by allowing you to stream and share your creations.

Muxtape is beautiful in its simplicity: start a free account, upload songs from your hard drive, and send the URL to your friends. When you want to hear a mix, just click on a song, and hit Return to play and pause the music. When the first song finishes, the next song starts loading and playing. There are a few limitations, so you aren't allowed to create more than one mix at a time, or upload more than one track from any single album or artist. In any case, Muxtape is far too simple and cool (and free?!) to survive the wrath of the RIAA, so enjoy it while you can.

ps – check out my rad 1-song Virgil Shaw muxtape
