Lightway: OLED solar lights built into window frames

15592front.jpg

Here’s a design concept that uses nanotech teamed up with photovoltaics to make windows that light the night using organic LEDs (OLED). Winner of a Dyson Student Award, Lightway uses panels shaped in a style that harkens back to the old days of louvered windows. Designer Damian Savio says they’re highly efficient, able to take 5 watts’ worth of sunlight and emit the equivalent of a 60-watt incandescent bulb.

Check out the possibilities in the gallery below. While this concept might be a bit far-fetched, we’re intrigued with the versatility of OLED lighting, a technology that will take over the lighting industry in the next 10 years with walls of light, curvy and flexible designs, and infinite color possibilities. There’s no indication of how far away this particular design is from the real world, but it points toward what’s to come.
