Real computer nerds who want to put together a monster of a gaming PC build their own computers. They know that doing it themselves saves all sorts of money and lets them get exactly what they want. Lazier, richer people just pay other people to do it for them. That's all well and good, but make sure you're getting your money's worth before doing that.
Just take a look at this Vigor Colossus, for example. It's got some pretty hot specs, to be sure: two Radeon HD 3870s in SLI, 8GB DDR2 800 RAM, two terabytes of HD space in RAID 0, a 1000W power supply, and a couple of honking monitors. Pretty great, right? Sure. But is it $8,000 worth of great? I'm going to go out on a limb and say hell no. No computer should be worth that much no matter how many bells are whistles are inside. This isn't the early 90's, people. Use your heads.

Uh, yeah, that's about $6000 more than you needed to pay for that computer. Who the hell needs 2 TB to game?! I don't care that it is raided, it's overkill.

Radeon's in SLI? That's probably why it's so expensive.
Hint - Radeon's don't do SLI, they do Crossfire.

For 99% of the population, I agree with you Adam. But there is that lucky 1% who have money to burn. If I were in that group, I'd certainly pay for a machine like this and save my time to do other things (like playing games).

Yea, ATI = Crossfire not sli...

Probably due to the bells being whistles as well, very complex technology that. Not even that future proof either, DDR2 RAM, what about DDR3? Probably only has a 32-bit OS to make full use of that RAM as well :) 3870s aren't that expensive either, for that sort of money I'd expect two 3870X2s or probably two 8800gtxs.
Probably most of the money was spent on the monitors.
No mention of processor either, probably a crappy celeron thrown in there. Whoever bought that PC was had.

I 100% agree there is no way you should pay that much money on a computer. If you really dont know how to build it your self you can def. find a builder to do it for half that price. Like me for example I am starting my own company "FusionXcomputers" and I am selling my computers at cost! 0% mark up on all hardware. I just charge a little bit for labor and stress testing. I guarantee you will not find any other company with lower prices then my company. Plus I am offering 3 year warranty with any of my computers and I will have a live feed setup so you can watch me or one of my master builders assemble your computer and on top of all of that we will be offering trade ins so if you have a old computer lying around you can trade it in to us for a gift card, or a deduction off the price of the computer of your choice or for upgrades no one else offers that as well. The website will be launched in the beginning of next month so spread the word. I will be giving away one of my systems as well so visit the site. you can check out the beta site at http://www.tcfusion.com/teds.html Let me know what you think of the site.

I disagree, Adam. I blogged my response :

Pshah, eight thousand? Two radeons. yawn. Go to ebay and look up the most expensive desktop system they got for sale. Can you say 50 gigs of processing? Remember when your old dos games started having speed issues and you had to get special software like moslo to slow the computer down. That might once again be a problem except with Half Life 2 or Crysis...

Huuh what about the two high end video cards? and the skulltrail setup with 8 top of the line processing cores from intel and 8gb of ram? add that to the two terabytes and the 64 bit Vista Ultimate and this is by far the meanest monster ever. trust me man, this is actually a good price. Alienware is who you should be bashing because theyre selling Rigs with half the power of this one for $12000 dollars with only one monitor.
i cant wait till i start crysis over on this Bad Bitch.

twisted, i went to the website you posted, and I would like to know what the actual website is, I would like to take a look at your computers and see what you have for what prices. I tried searching for it but did not find anything.

Stop your bitching. This PC is worth about $5500. Some people have no idea how to build computers and would rather spend the extra thousand dollars. Sure you can build a PC yourself for cheap but does it come with a warranty? The price of this PC is so much more than just hardware.

This is a pretty uneducated article to begin with. Complete with uneducated responses.
#1 who games and doesnt p2p, and the price difference is minimal for the hds.
#2 alot of times you have to get a way better mb to use sli or xfire, upping the price. judging by the fact that this pc uses dd2 im guessing its intel's skultrail, and for some reason this doesnt mention the processors. i work for a direct intel dealer and that mb and 2 dou core xtremes or xeons make our cost 1.5-2k right off the bat. not to mention u need an extended case for the ATX-E boards.
and do you have any idea how much "two hulking monitors" cost, lol.
plus using radeons in "sli" lol, adds the 1,000.00 for the A+ class this guy needs to take.
