The Wireless Impact Guardian, or WIG, is a project by Brycen Spencer from UMass Amherst and it aims at taking the traditional motorcycle helmet one technological step further. Integrated into the helmet is a GPS receiver, accelerometer and communication module.
WIG is activated when the helmet is buckled on. If the accelerometer detects an impact that surpasses a predetermined safety level an alarm will go off. The rider has a minute to turn off the alarm or the GPS location will be immediately sent to an emergency team to quickly respond to the scene. Spencer has already won multiple awards for his revolutionary design and he plans to use prize money and other grants towards further production of this life-saving invention.
