Solar USB flash drives aren't quite a good idea

solarflashdrive.jpgOn the one hand, putting a tiny screen on USB flash drives so you can quickly and easily see just how much space is available without having to plug them into a computer is a good idea. And if they need power, I suppose getting it from the sun isn't such a terrible idea.

On the other hand, I'm pretty sure not a single one of the USB flash drives that I own have ever seen sunlight. I mean, who uses these things outside? They sit in drawers and in pockets and at the bottoms of bags, not out in fields where they can soak up the rays. And unless you do all your computing outside, this thing is gonna be a real pain to juice up. But hey, you're getting there, designers.

So how much light do you need? Man, solar power calculators work fine inside with available light, I don't have to go outside to use it! I would imagine it would be the same for that.

Good point, Cullenpest... I love the idea of being able to see the memory left and it might not need that much power... I could just leave it on the desk in the morning, with the curtains open.

This looks more like a marketing act to display a nice and eye=catching logo. You can even display small color pixels on a small display like that and even run small animated stuff, a bit like those digital picture frames.

See a nice collection fo customized USB flash drives over at www.memotrek.com

From a marketing perspective this makes quite an interesting promotional gift, especially when you think ROI.
