Remote vision advances promise better control over unmanned military might

Head-Aimed-Remote-Viewer-MAARS.jpgA team at Chatten Associates is bridging the gap between remote vehicle and operator by helping the human feel far closer to the action. According to a study by DARPA, a remote operator will react nearly four times slower when controlling an unmanned vehicle than a driver operating a manned one.

By wearing a headset called a Head-Aimed Remote Viewer, or HARV, the operator looks through the eyes of a camera that mimics the movement of his own head, effectively putting him in a virtual driver's seat. The HARV system is shown to boost the overall performance of remote operation by 300-400%, includes features like night vision, laser target designation, optical zooming and more and costs around $40,000.
