Yes, this concept CD player is really slick looking, what with its touchscreen interface and unique-wall mounted design. Yes, it would make your apartment or house look that much more futuristic. But did nobody send the designer the memo that CDs are a dead medium?
I mean, come on. Who is still designing CD players these days? Clearly, CDs are going the way of the cassette and the 8-track, soon to be reserved for sentimental nostalgia addicts. So why spend the time creating some fancy version of yesterday's hot product? I suppose I'm not one to judge, but somehow I don't think this'll ever become a big seller.

Well, for starters, it was created for a design competition, you can't actually BUY the thing. Try browsing through http://www.yankodesign.com/ some time and you'll find dozens of BEAUTIFUL yet totally impractical/impossible designs.
Why CDs? Hmm, perhaps because until iTunes starts selling lossless formats, anyone who has ever played a musical instrument or listened to something other than XM, FM, or MP3 can hear a world of difference. Compressed music is total junk. Compare a high-definition music CD to an MP3 on nice speakers. If you're part of generation MP3, you'll hear it. If you are old enough to have been here in the heyday of CD music, it'll blow your mind.
That said, it does require some ear-training to really 'get it'.

Come to think of it. There is a teriffic irony in a sci-fi blog that uses a CGI script to post comments talking about CDs being a dead format...
Anyone with me on this? ;o)

What's funny is the article lists CD's as going the way of the 8-track. MP3's ARE the modern 8-track! Yeah, I love my 1000's of tunes on my MP3 player, but I rip them myself, off the far superior compact disk. Any person who loves music still buys CD's. The problem is there is a lot less good music to buy.
