Last week the Greener Gadgets Conference wrapped up with a design competition to make what else, a green gadget. The first place winner is the EnerJar, which was designed by Matt Meshulam and Zach Dwiel. The two took home $2,500 for their DIY gadget energy meter. What makes the EnerJar particularly unique is the combination of functionality and design. It's obviously a very functional gadget that can keep you in the know about how much energy you happen to be hogging, but it also looks very nice with the jar-type of design. Power meters like EnerJar already exist, but none are as pretty .
Other award winners include Gravia, a floor lamp that is green in some way or another and Green Cell, a rechargeable battery pack vending machine. Both of which took home $1,000 each.

What's so smart about using an extra device that I assume uses more energy (however small the extra amount) to be green? And then rigging it to plug into an ancient-looking non-grounded outlet, which doesn't seem safe, to boot.
I think the rechargable battery pack vending idea looks much more deserving of awards.
