Usually changing the shape of a bookshelf means getting out the hammer and plywood. Not so the Elastic Bookshelf — this simple idea loops a stretchable belt around two pegs, providing plenty of possible configurations. Pop in a piece of wood to open it up, or just leave it wrapped between the two pegs to keep things straight and narrow. A design project from Arianna Vivenzio, the Elastic Bookshelf isn't in stores just yet.

Not too bad looking - although I wonder what would happen to the stuff you put in there after a time - just like regular bands, they tend to stretch and never *really* go back to the shape they started at...

Don't think it's a giant rubber band per se; seems to be one of those wind out divider / barrier things you get for directing lines at movies and airports etc (the "stretch" comes from more material being unwound from the knobs on the wall), could be wrong though. Either way, very clever, I like it.

Hammer and plywood? Those must be some serious wall anchors to support that hefty of a rubber band. I bet it would take way more effort to install those pegs than the support for a normal shelf. Cool lookin tho.

Very intresting concept. I don't know if it is very functional though.

This band will end up like a vagina, you can stretch it and stretch it but eventually after a good few years it will go loose and floppy like a wizards sleeve and never return back to the perfect little pink slit again.
Peace yo
