Miracles of Science: Watch Sand that Never Gets Wet

Though some of you may have seen it in science class as a kid, we love this video of hydrophobic sand in action.

The sand (sometimes known as magic sand) was originally invented to help contain large ocean oil spills. The plan was to pour the waterproof sand onto the oil spills so it would mix with the oil and make it heavy enough to sink. However, the product too pricey to serve its original intended purpose, and has instead been marketed towards for children. The consultants over at Inventables now use the product to spark innovative ideas in other companies. But someone's got to figure out a better use for this stuff— got any good ideas?

how bout for us wisconsinites that have those long winters with tons of snow....at points we run out of salt and revert to a mixture of basic sand and salt...but with water proof sand on the icey roads.. and it never gets wet.. ding ding, can we say miracle for the road, this stuff would last and should be easily retrievable once the season is over with the street sweepers...
