iPhone users will soon find a few new features on their beloved trinkets, all thanks to a free upgrade of the phone's firmware to the latest version 1.1.3, available today. Topping the list is the ability to pinpoint your exact location with the iPhone's improved Maps app, using a sometimes-faulty faux GPS system that triangulates cell towers and Wi-Fi locations. There's also a new drag-and drop feature for home screen icons, and users can now add web shortcuts, called Web Clips, as icons on that front screen, too.
The Maps upgrade, while not as useful as a full-blown GPS system, will be a significant improvement over the previous version that requires users to enter their current locations and then keep manually updating as they move around. Another welcome new trick is the ability to create up to nine home screens that can be quickly accessed by flicking a finger left or right. There's also group SMS messages, and the software remembers a group so you can send another message to the same people again later. Overall, this looks like a welcome upgrade, but we're still missing that copy/cut/paste capability.
