Feature-packed Flashlight DVR Compact fulfills every spy fantasy
flashlightdvr.jpg

The Flashlight DVR Compact by Swann puts everything right in your hands. It's got a digital video recorder that works as a camcorder and takes still images to boot, a built-in mic for audio and the ability to capture in night vision for when you've got a black-ops assignment. It records onto an SD card, capable of stuffing eight hours of footage on 1GB, and there's a panic siren that'll have the guard dogs running. Oh, and it's also a flashlight.

What's more, the whole thing is encased in an aluminum alloy casing that will be able to take just as much punishment as you can, and maybe even dish it out.

Being a spy isn't cheap though - $399 to get you started.

Bogus. They don't have anything like this on their site.

this unit is real, however, I can assure the readers that SWANN Security do not actually make this item but rather re-badge it from the original manufacturer.

It is obtainable from a number of other sources around the world, including Romar in UK and SAY Security Group Asia and they sell it for US$285.00.

Another somewhat (perhaps) mis-leading feature is that Swann Security claim that

“It is also capable of in MPEG4 at 640x480, and it will give you about 8 hours of QVGA recording on a 1GB SD card”

According to the original manufacturers specifications it will only record for 1.5 hours on a 1Gb SD card. So unless the Swann Security units come with a minimum of 6 Gb of memory it cannot be capable of recording up to 8 hours of video.

According to our tests it does record 10Mb per minute that means without the extra SD card the unit would only record for approx 10minutes on its internal memory.

At 10 Mb per minute this would relate to approx 1.5 hours of recording per 1Gb SD card.

Another interesting item is that according to manufacturers specifications it can only support up to 2Gb SD card but the Swann article have it up to 4 Gb SD card (1GB SD card (4GB max).

I wonder how many people will get sucked in to buying this because of the claimed recording time ?
