CES Weird: Emtrace's Photoskins offer Widgets without Internet

photoskinsk.jpg

We want to like Emtrace's Photoskin, really we do. It's very sleek, thin and shiny, though since it's much taller than a credit card it's hardly wallet-sized. The real problem with the Photoskin is that it's a Linux-based portable Widget-viewer that doesn't have any Internet connectivity. In order to download photo, weather, or stock information, you have to hook the device up to your computer with a USB cable. Problem is, if you're near your computer, it's easier to check the weather there. And if you're away from your computer, then you're getting weather and stock information that could be hours, even days old.

Even if you want a Photoskin just to carry around baby pictures, you'll only get 128MB of storage space: not a lot for the $150 the company plans on charging for the Widget gadget when it's released sometime mid-year.
