CES $$$: NRG Dock provides 'free' solar power for a price

The NRG Dock is a “personal solar charger” that will power your gadgets off the grid, meaning you can cut pennies from your electric bill as long as you don’t mind paying $500 for the dock first. That wallet-gouging price aside, NRG does have a few neat features that you don’t see too often with this type of solar gadget.

The most innovative the panel, which can detach from the base station and be stuck onto a window via little suctions cups, so you’ve got options when trying to capture the most sunlight. And it has a built-in battery that stores energy during the day so you can use it to charge your gadgets at night. And, er, the name NRG is pretty cool.

But that $500 price tag means buying this will only make sense if you live in a place where you can’t pipe in electricity on a regular basis, or for emergency situations. As a day-to-day solution it’s just too expensive.
