CES 2008: Lava MP3 player shuffles 2GB of tunes for $40

lavaplayer.jpg

We're usually pretty skeptical about inexpensive iPod imitators, mostly because they're not very inexpensive. But today we met Truly's Lava, a cute and tiny portable music player that has 2GB of memory, can operate on shuffle or run songs in order, and only costs $40. It's quite light and we assume that it costs about $4 to make, but we dug its Chicklet size, and the fact that it had double the capacity of an iPod Shuffle. No clip though, so you have to wear it on a lanyard.

It's adorable, and even smaller than i thought. I still can't understand how to charge it, though (or even whether it needs to be charged). Does anyone else know? It's supposed to blink red if it's low on battery, but what do i do after that? the instructions, though really clear and precise and easy to understand, kind of glance over that part.

It's a great player, easy to use, and charges through the usb port, btw.

By norad at 1:35 PM ON 03/09/08

The flash sucks. Can't load more than 750m.

I bought one and it broke really fast. It's so cheaply made that it didn't surprise me, but if you value your money don't buy one.

I like this player but I am having the same problem it wont take more than 400megs of music???? IS there a FIX? or a support website ? anything?

By New owner at 5:34 PM ON 07/10/08

I wonder if there is anyway to make a playlist, since I have put in over 100 my favrite dongs and 2 audiobooks.

By ieyeye at 9:17 AM ON 07/31/08

For those having the problem of not being able to load the 2 gigs of music. These seem to have a restriction on the number of files/folders in the root directory of 125. Sticking everything in a folder on the root directory will resolve the problem.

By Red at 5:20 PM ON 01/05/09

I also need more info about the battery--charging, life of, etc. If it charges thru the USB port, what to look for, and how long is the charge. FIY: get good headphones...

By Venkat at 9:52 AM ON 02/01/09

how to transfer song to this thing.

By Lava Owner at 5:36 PM ON 02/20/09

1. To charge this device, you must have a USB cable to connect from the side of the device to the computer. Leave it in for a good 30mins to an hour THE CENTER LIGHT WILL TURN RED.

NOTE: You may not listen to songs during the charge. If you are listening to any songs then connect the device, the music will stop playing(blue light) and turn red to charge

2. To transfer files on this device, you need to have a USB cable to transfer/load files to it.
NOT ALL USB CABLES WORK, find one that does.
Supports Windows XP (have not tested it on other OS)

3. To make the volume louder press and hold >>.
To make the voulume softer press and hold <<.

4. It doesn't have the capability to "shuffle" songs as far as I can tell.

5. It's buggy, the device has problems holding more than 750 MB or more.

Anyone have trouble turning it off/playing songs? If I recently take it off the usb it turns on and plays but if it's been in my pocket for an hour, when I turn it on it doesn't play any songs (solid blue light, the 'Standby/Pause Mode'...any ideas?

Just got the little 2 gig Lava mp3 player. Cannot for the life of me figure out how to open the little cap on the side to charge or load it. How do you open it up. Anyone get it open yet?

By how at 9:16 AM ON 08/29/09

How do you turn it on? It charges, but I can't turn it on.

By shimany at 1:52 AM ON 09/16/09

ok. look at the instruction manual for it people! if you can read a website, you can read an instruction manual. you turn it on by pressing and holding the play button untill it turns on. > is next. press and hold previous to turn down the volume. press and hold next to turn it up. to change the eq, press and hold the play button and the next button untill you hear a sound change. to change it into shuffle mode, press and hold the play button and the previous button. thats all i remember from READING THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL.

btw, mine died. all it does when i turn it on is redlight. its charged, it reads on my computer and there are songs on it... but all it does is turn on its red light. its not in the manual, thats how i ended up here. is there a place to get new firmware or something?
