Imagine if you could have bionic eyes that gave you a display overlaid over your vision. You could see information about things that you were looking at, just like the Terminator. It sure would make life more interesting, wouldn't it? Too bad it's all a fantasy.
Or is it? Researchers have developed bionic contact lenses that contain tiny electric circuits and LEDs that would allow for just such a display to be possible. You could have a personal heads-up display giving you info at all times, or video game makers could create totally immersive worlds that you view right through your own eyes. The lenses are currently still being worked on, so don't expect to see them anytime soon, but the technology is there. It's only a matter of time.

Sounds incredibly cool. Imagine being a doctor and getting augmented reality vision while operating on someone. The potential is vast for this. I would just be a little worried about what might happen if they should short out or overload.

Awsome!! Do you know what the price range for a pair would be, and also would they be disposable or hydraclear like we have today?? Also when looking at them, there would have to be wireless transmitters to allow information to transfered between the lens and an objecet, how else would they be able to gather information? Finally, if looking for a reliable "Channel" for the information to travel between the lens and the person, it would have to form a link with the persons neo cortex or there would be no control over what would be seen or in their use. This would mean that they would have to be permanent in their application, and also would have to be constantly moisturized to keep the eyes in perfect condition.
If your looking for people to test them out though, I'm in!! I would love to have vision where I could recieve info on anything visually in the way that they are to function, and they would be great for my gaming!!! Keep it up on their progress.

well if the lenses had a transmitter then to control the info and input it would take a keypad...because i don't want to have something happen like is does in the book "Feed" by M. T. Anderson...where the whole "civilized" world collapses because of the implants into the brain break down world wide..
so i think we will get like a touch pad that could be placed on an arm or leg...or like a glove like devise that does the same..
but just think about what would happen if we could get a full 5 senses system set-up....
By Viper at 9:00 PM ON 01/19/08
This maybe a item that requires it to be solar power.(By design) Maybe the transmitter/receiver can be linked thru bluetooth like cell phones since everything else is. Just a thought...
By imrandy at 11:33 PM ON 01/19/08
To me it sounds like it would project an overlay image, not transmit singles to the brain interpreted as something the wearer is seeing. That is what the LEDs are for. As for a transmission, the software itself could contain shape recognition that is designed for specific uses. There would be a set to provide information on faces, one set for info on landscapes, another set for traffic, etc. Instead of buying individual games or movies for use on a console, one would buy individual contacts for each game or movie in which the wearer him/herself is the console. At least the first generation, anyway. Perhaps this will lead to all future products fitted with a wireless transmitter to send all pertinent information. People could even be fitted with/carry a transmitted that would send the information they wanted, such as a quote, statistical information, phone number, and further down the line even video clips. Just looking at somebody would be like accessing their myspace, facebook, and youtube pages all at the same time.

you could view pron from the privacy of your eyelids! lol

Unless the picture above is just a concept of what the product might look like, seems to me all we'll be seeing is a circuit board.
By forgeknight at 5:28 AM ON 01/24/08
Heh, sounds cool.
And so it begins. The useful applications of this technology are staggering. Civilian and military. Can you imagine how much more effective our Marines and Soldiers would be on the ground with this kind of readily available streaming data?
By kamikaz0495 at 5:34 AM ON 01/24/08
ah! I see the part over the pupil is the readout. The circuits are above the part of the eye that does not see. Still i hate to be a skeptic but an 9X7 LED grid isn't very impressive at this moment.
By kamikaz0495 at 5:38 AM ON 01/24/08
A 9X7 LED Grid will be very useful in displaying numerical data for now. It will be interesting to see how they integrate GUI into this technology.
By DaCAP at 6:24 AM ON 01/24/08
How do they power those electronics? The usual trick of irradiation with R/F sounds dangerous!
By enrique at 8:24 AM ON 01/24/08
This might be ok if I have the option to turn off the display. Otherwise, I'd find it distracting.
By STYLL at 9:18 AM ON 01/24/08
That's great!! But what about something more practical in the immediate like 20/15 vision, or helping those who are near blind. There must be a way, granted less profitable, to apply the tech for medical advances as well.
By Jonathan at 9:52 AM ON 01/24/08
Actually you wouldn't need to transmit wirelessly from the lens. You'd get the information transmitted from your body. You'd probably have something on your wrist or ankle, or possibly leg or arm that touches your skin, providing additional power and transmitting the signal to you. Now that might be wireless from the wrist unit, but imagine your body as one big antenna, with the entire thing powered by the electrical impulses going through your body (or from the powe r pack you'd wear). This is a way cool concept, and I look forward to it.
By AskGeorgeRoy at 12:08 PM ON 01/24/08
OMG I can not wait! Usualy I wait 3 years for tech prices to fall b4 diving in however this must be had the moment it hits the market!! WOOT UW!

if you whant a human subject to try the bionic contact linces i will try them

I CALL PHOTOSHOP!!!
By sings4u at 7:21 PM ON 01/24/08
I would buy some,or test them for you
By Moghenien at 9:16 PM ON 01/24/08
AWESOME!!! When these cost less than 5 grand, let me know!!!
By pillar of babel at 3:57 PM ON 01/25/08
The potential uses and benefits are endless... across all fields. This WILL be a tremendous product. I want to buy some stock!
By ray benson at 6:04 PM ON 02/13/08
that is like the hottest thing i ever seen when are the in stores and whats the price
By show_off_80 at 11:01 AM ON 02/26/08
The uses for this would be endless and potentially dangerous but like everyone else on this, I would like to try a pair out; if not buy a pair or two. I do think that this would be very interesting to see hit the market.
By Julian at 11:51 AM ON 03/03/08
Considering the they are just now telling us about this the CIA, NSA, and such have probably been using them for at least a year.
By Julian at 11:54 AM ON 03/03/08
That is supposed to say. Considering the fact.
By andrewlochner at 9:37 PM ON 03/06/08
let me know where i can be a test subject. i wear contacts. this would so cool if they automatically change so no matter what your prescription was you could see
By Equinox at 4:56 AM ON 05/28/08
Man if they are developing these now, imagine what the military has in this regard. They probably already have Black Ops agents walking around with cool augmented vision ;)
By Nathan at 8:59 AM ON 01/02/09
Sounds like Slash Gear. Except Slash Gear, the info goes through the pupil like normal vision, but because it's so close to your eye, it causes migraines. I hope this new contact offers some sort of solution to that, like auto-transferring the information to the rods and cones in the back of your eye already, superseding the pupil altogether.
