Inside Tokyo's high-tech traffic control center

tokyo-traffic-control-cent.jpgNo, this isn't mission control for the next NASA space mission. It's actually the Tokyo Traffic Control Center, the brain of all the roadways in the biggest city on earth. It's impressive, to say the least.

Manned by operators working in grueling 24-hour shifts, it allows them to see the traffic situation in the entire city as it happens in real-time. If a traffic jam occurs, they have the ability to manually control any of the 15,154 traffic lights spread around the city to get things moving again. It's also hooked up to 17,000 vehicle detectors to help sense how dense the traffic is at any given point. It's a meticulous machine, one that helps keep people moving in the gigantic metropolis of Tokyo.
