Air France takes baby steps toward full in-flight calling

a318-air-france-inflight-calling.jpg

Remember how airlines in the United States announced that we'd all get Wi-Fi in the sky? Air France is fitting one of its Airbus A318 planes with the means to provide in-flight calling for a preliminary six month trial. But just because the means are there, doesn't mean passengers will be able to make calls in the air. Air France is only authorizing text messages and emails for the first three months, and then slowly ramp up toward the end goal of everyone on a plane blabbing away.

Air France's in-flight calling system is being provided by OnAir, and will allow passengers to make their calls for $2.50 per minute. Talk quick — that's a cocktail every two minutes.
