Vudu offering HD downloads, say goodbye to HD DVD and Blu-ray

Vudu_Bourne.jpg

You know this big ol' format war between HD DVD and Blu-ray? Well, I hope you haven't spent too much money choosing sides. That's because sooner rather than later we're not going to be all that interested in either format, what with them being physical and all. Yes, the era of HD content in digital formats is coming right at us.

Here's the first shot fired: Vudu, the video-on-demand box, will be offering all current and new customers free HD copies of The Bourne Identity and The Bourne Supremacy for free, with an option to download a copy of The Bourne Ultimatum for $25. Well, the price is right on those first two at least. Look for getting movies like this to be the way it's done in the future, and look for major tech companies to have stacks of unsold Blu-ray and HD DVD players collecting dust in warehouses everywhere.

Reality check. I'll give you the facts because VUDU is busy misleading consumers with audio from the 1980s and little to rent.

Call this an effort to give consumers all the information they need to make an informed decision about VUDU. My experience with VUDU, good and mostly bad (including their personal attacks directed me), are detailed in these posts. As well as the revelation that many review sites are populated by so-called VUDU evangelists, those who are paid to give glowing remarks about the product. These paid "reviewers" usually do not inform the reader that they are affiliated with VUDU. Amazon is filled with these posts. VUDU's forum moderators also have a nasty habit of neglecting to mention they work for VUDU when composing a review. I find that highly unethical and troublesome.

So make an informed decision before you invest $399 on a product that might not be around for long. But I leave that decision to you. Buyer's remorse is a terrible feeling and consumers should have all the facts.

Oh, and the whole VUDU offers HD - well, there's less than a handful available to purchase. Yeah, purchase because they're not available to rent.

But VUDU won't tell you that.

OK, so you seem surprised that VUDU puts up it's own forum and then the MODERATORS work for VUDU? WHO DID YOU EXPECT would moderate what is basically a new, AND UNKNOWN PRODUCT on a forum SPONSORED BY VUDU?

Gee, didn't TELL YOU UP FRONT that they only have a FEW movies - TO BUY? Good lord, you DID fall off the turnip truck last night, didn't you.

This is SOP for ANY LAUNCH OF ANY NEW TECHNOLOGY. Do you remember all the little hiccups of IPhone? Or HDDVD or BlueRAY? NO?

Same thing happened. And it's taken more than two years to get ANY kind of selection on the OTHER two formats.

Live and learn, hopefully. You do sound like a very technological marketing noobie. Grow up. Let VUDU make their way to the public and let the CONSUMER decide. OMG, that's CONSUMERISM (capitalism) run rampant.

Which is HOW IT SHOULD BE!

Let's face it, the service reported is substandard and costs more than the higher quality alternatives. On top of that, Apple is likely to kill them because of their entrenched possition in the media market.

I'll save my money for an option that makes sense. This one does not.
