Sarcos exoskeleton: sooo close to being a cyborg

sarcos-robot_28.jpg

The idea of soldiers waging war from inside of performance-enhancing exoskeletons is often dreamed about in science fiction — from the pages of Robert Heinlein's Starship Troopers to classic cartoons such as Exosquad. Now it looks like Sarcos, a robotics developer from Utah, is taking the concept one whirring, mechanized step further. When strapped in, a soldier is able to perform a variety of strength and endurance intensive actions without feeling much of the fatigue, as the frame mimics their movements and supplements them. Lifting several hundred pounds is a piece of cake, and the exoskeleton is agile enough to scale stairs and different grades of inclination.

Hopefully the final model won't have an unwieldy umbilical cord keeping the soldiers tethered to the spot. Sarcos has been working on its exoskeleton for six years and it says it will probably need another five before they get it to where it needs to be. Click on through to see the thing in action.

yes

Unfortunately, the XOS will probably never be released to the general public. This machine is like F-22 Raptor. The military will enjoy it, and the people will wish they had it. Still, perhaps someday when it becomes outdated there will be a couple available to the public. Untill then, we would be better off placing our hopes in the HAL-5.

Being in the Army I can see the universal benefits of this not only in the military but in civilian life as well... think of all of the labor intensive jobs that everyday guys do. Construction would severely benefit from this as forklifts and cranes would be virtually useless. I think that this would also be helpful in combat but ultimately might not be so beneficial in the field.

i agree i think that the xos would have huge benefits to soldiers on patrol being that i would allow them to carry large amount of water ( water is essential in most modern day war zones ) and one can't forget the extra body armor and ammunition that it would allow you to carry... as long a it had a power source that would allow it to go on extended patrols and mission.

Probably a dead discussion but if it's reliable in real world environments just the usefulness in areas where wheeled vehicles arent easily used would be great. establishing a forward base or servicing tanks in the field without the need to bring in additional heavy equipment.

and i guess in cities instead of bringing a tank into a tight area you could load two of these down with armor and racks of rockets. or finally put a minigun on a man sized platform.

Yes, exoskeletons are definitely a neat thing. And this is just one of the first; it's a tech that will certainly be developed further. I think it's inevitable that any infantry you see in the near future will eventually be equipped with exos, and the armor that comes in tow. It's something you cannot justify NOT buying once the stuff gets efficient enough and cheap enough (which is the stickler; after all, with defense cuts they justify not buying a bunch of basic stuff for troops right now).

As to uses... wow, tons. I mean, it's pretty obvious; it gives you the power of heavy machinery in the form of a human - a form our brain is MADE to operate through. Which means whatever job you were doing done quicker and better than it would have been done with the heavy machinery.

It's really all about your power source. It's hard to get a good enough power plant or battery to really open up the tech's potential. Carrying around tank plate takes a lot of energy - the tanks have massive treads and diesel or jets to do it.

Wonder how small they can make nuclear plants today? We might be able to make a big enough suit to pack a little pebble bed nuke into it; that'd make a hell of a tank. Might not be too safe though :D Only send it to people you REALLY dislike.

This thing rocks. with a good power source, a big ass sniper rifle, a 5000 round per minute minigun, and a little armor plate, a squad of these would own the battlefield. I want one

By JustCurious at 11:37 AM ON 12/06/08

...and if you step out it becomes a self powered android robot!!! which means a single soldier could start a line of exos marching, maybe clone-link 'em all like Olympic synchronised swimming! A platoon of exos controlled by a human sergeant!!! Hellboy's Golden Army anyone?

THIS IS FANTASTI !!!!!! I am disabled with a lower back injury and a lot of nerve damage. This thing could let me do things I just can't do for myself now like take the dog for a walk. Help my wife unlad the car when she goes shoping. Pick up my little girl. Where do I go to get one.

There's the toy you'll get first, and it's not out of a price range either.
