Whether you love or hate the Zune, there's no denying that Microsoft is doing something really cool with the ZuneOriginals line. Starting today, November 13th, Microsoft will sell 4 GB, 8GB and 80 GB variants of its portable media player with one of 27 laser-etched designs dreamed up by 18 legit artists (their bios can be found at Cool Hunting). Now, you might be thinking: "Oh boy! A gimmick introduced to drive up the price!" Nope, all the designs are offered for no extra charge. Each ZuneOriginal features the latest Zune version 2.0 firmware, which will also be offered to first generation Zune owners for no extra charge.
If you ask me, this is a hell of a lot cooler than just a few purdy color — though you get those, too.
