We just told you about Blockbuster's plans to offer cellphone movie rentals. Now, Japanese print house DNP and am3, a media distributor, are hoping to do the same for the DS, also offering e-books, Japanese comics, and television shows. How would you pack all that content onto those little DS cartridges? It ain't easy.
DS owners will need to buy a $40 kit to get going, which includes a cartridge adapter with space for a microSD card that fits into the DS slot, a USB microSD card reader, and a 512 MB card. You'd then purchase whatever content you want to see from a site with your computer, use the USB adapter to get said content onto your 512 MB card, and then fit it into the cartridge adapter. Despite the DS having built-in Wi-Fi, it doesn't have any memory allotted for this kind of thing. You also might need more than a 512 MB card if you want to watch feature films, though the companies say movies will fit onto, at most, a 2 GB card.
It'll be interesting to see if the move makes the DS any more attractive as a media player. Despite the general failure of Sony's UMD format, the PSP still remains a viable option for people who want to watch whatever on the go — and it's the same with the iPhone.
