Darpa's PowerSwim gets people swimming 150% faster

DARPA_PowerSwim.jpg

Those military eggheads at DARPA in the Pentagon have been hard at work at a new device to help people swim more efficiently, like dolphins or penguins. What they've come up with is this: PowerSwim.

Utilizing a couple of "wings" attached at the ankles and knees, it's designed to get people swimming 150% faster than normal, using major muscles like the quads and hamstrings rather than the smaller leg muscles that we use now. It's initially headed for people such as Navy SEALs who have much better uses for it than you do, but eventually, one can hope, we'll see a new event at the summer Olympics with these things.

New? I seem to remember something like that being shown on the Discovery Channel 20 years ago (on one of those future-tech shows). Looks like the same device to me.
