$280 Zonbu laptop is cheap, but it requires a monthly fee

zonbulappie.jpgSmall, cheap laptops are all the rage these days, as it seems everyone wants a wee computer that's low on power but high on value to take with them on trips. Now there's another one with a super-low pricetag.

The Zonbu Mini Laptop will run only $280, but there's a catch. Customers will need to pay a $15 monthly fee for online storage to use it, which could add up and make it much less cheap if it's used for a long time. The specs, if you're curious, are as follows: 1.5GHz VIA C7-M CPU, a 15.4-inch widescreen 1440x900 resolution display, 512MB of RAM, a DVD burner and Wifi b and g. It'll be available early next year to cheapskates everywhere.

Woo Hoo! Do they give out awards for the most outrageous piece of...vaporware? I mean the 'One Laptop' program is already falling apart due to rising costs (already past $150). The Sweden based Medison has been failing to ship their $150 laptop (with much lower specs) since August. The closest piece of *real* technology is the Asus eee 4g and it's slower, low-res, no optical drive, and about double the price. Ever the optimist, as soon as I hear these things are on the shelf, I'll jump in my flying car and pick one up
