The espresso-making fridge: finally, an appliance mash-up that makes sense

Whirlpool has announced a refrigerator with an in-door espresso maker. We've seen ovens that refrigerate, refrigerators with CD players, and fridges that throw beer at you, but none seemed likely to catch on. This coffee/chilled food idea strikes us as more practical.

The Whirlpool model operates with coffee pods, and it filters incoming water before brewing. In addition to saving counter space, the company claims that the appliance is energy-efficient. It goes on sale in the U.K. in January, but will most likely be too expensive for the average cold-food loving coffee-drinker.

Great. The dishwasher making my espresso. That's all I need.

What next? A Hoover vacuum cleaner that makes me dinner?

I'm all for multitasking robots and appliances. Caffeine from my fridge? I can't wait for that to become mainstream.
