Sony PFR-V1 is the love child of speakers, headphones, earphones

They may be worn on the head and in the ears, but Sony's PFR-V1 aren't your typical headphones. The headset actually contains tiny personal speakers that rest on the ears and are meant to completely mimic the sound quality of high-end traditional speakers.

The PFR-V1 is said to be the first headphones that separate bass, midrange and treble, thanks in part by including an "extended bass reflect duct" that sits just inside the ear. These "personal field speakers" carry a very hefty $540 price tag and have a look many would suggest not suitable for public. They're seriously hideous, but I'll bet they sound like angels singing Grease showtunes. The Sony PFR-V1 personal field speakers will be available October 10.
