Sony just rolled out the HDMS-S1D Digital Photo Album, aimed at photographers who would like to fill it up with their digital photos. Hook it up to your network via Ethernet, and send your photos to it over your network. It also accommodates multiple flash memory card formats, as well as CDs, DVDs and USB devices. Its internal software lets you organize those photos into albums, and then plays back slideshows on an HDTV via its HDMI and component ports.
But wait just a minute. This product leaves us scratching our heads. Across the bottom front of the unit you can plainly see the words "high definition media storage," making us think this product started out its life as a possible media server for movies, TV programs and other video. But then for some reason Sony put a measly 80-gig drive inside. Could it be that its throughput wasn't fast enough to handle HDTV? Its $400 price might have been a target for such a unit, but we say, stuff a 2-terabyte disk in there and let's watch some HDTV.
