Preserve your deceased loved ones in a photograph — literally

afterlife_photo.jpg

The potential for creating art with human remains has been around since the beginning of, well, human remains. For the most part, it's something society has shunned, choosing instead to bury the dead, or cremate them and save or spread the ashes. Lately, companies like Life Gem, which turns your loved one's ashes into a wearable diamond, have been trying to change Americans' relationship with remains.

Now, a company called Ink After Life can turn your deceased relatives and pets (if you have your pet cremated, that is, which is a little off-color to begin with) into printer ink, and then print a photograph of your choice (probably a picture of the departed) using that ink. You can't see that there's a body hidden in the picture, but the idea is that by knowing that it's there, you'll somehow feel closer to the dearly departed.

An 8x10 color print costs $79, and takes 4 to 6 weeks to produce from one ounce of ashes.
