iShoes motorized skates: cruise at 15 mph without moving your legs

iShoes-motorized-skates.jpg

While iShoes certainly will push you along at a leisurely 15 miles per hour, you might look a little silly wearing them. iShoes are an invention designed by brothers Ilya and Boris Kaganovich from Minnesota, and work a lot like roller skates, except they are motorized and controlled with a hand unit. Weighing eight pounds each, the skates are powered by electric motors that are good for five to seven miles per charge.

Useful for a short range journey, but you might not be getting back. Right now the iShoes are just a prototype, so no pricing or availability — though we do have a video for you after the jump.

I give up. Obesity, you win.

By DarrianAshoka at 3:49 AM ON 11/02/07

That was a cute comment, but I seriously doubt these would handle the weight of an obese person. Even if it could there would not be enough power to move them, other than down hill.

For a prototype they look pretty stylish and it seems to have been pretty well thought out. The wheels are large enough to not be impeded by many small obstruction on the sidewalks and roads. I could see using Makita's interchangable 18v lithium Ion cordless drill battery to power it and have a few charged spares in your back pack. Milwaukee Tools makes a 36v lithium Ion cordless drill battery for increased power and range, but I imagine it would be too dangerous to go faster than 15mph.

YES! YES! YES! Air Treks are slowly becoming a reality, now we just need to ditch that silly remote control.

By Drake Groth at 9:05 PM ON 05/19/08

Hehe nice... Funny found this through a website for making Air Treks. larlz I wish I had as much backing as these guys :( It would be nice to get funding for my Air Treks.

Me and my brother are making a pair of skates more similar to the air treks portrayed in the anime. we are estimating 20-25 mph i will be getting the motor i designed from the machine shop this weekend. we have also figured everything to be all inclusive in the skate.

By Viral Enigma at 1:55 PM ON 11/20/09

You guys are forgetting the most important aspect: they need to be powered by battery, yes, but once you start moving it should be powered by a perpetual motion generator or something of the like.

By David at 5:47 PM ON 12/03/09

Yo Guys... Me and my crew are working on making air treks right now.. But we need ideas.. Its quite challenging.. http://z13.invisionfree.com/TheAtProject3/

I'm not tech or mech savy, but I know how to make real AT's. I just came up with the general design. To make the full thing you need someone who can program, not me can't do that, and maybe a couple advances in technology like small but more powerful motor and power source. But I know how it all fits together.
