In May, Helio introduced the Ocean, the world's first dual slider phone (the number pad slides down vertically, the keyboard horizontally). The phone got great reviews, but in order to buy one, you have to sign up with Helio, which is still something of a niche network. If you're lusting after a dual slider, but are not sold on Helio, an Ocean competitor is on the way. Pantech will release the Duo later this month— it's just like the Ocean, but is slightly smaller and runs Windows Mobile.
The catch is that the Duo will only be AT&T compatible and available with a two-year contract (sound familiar?). In the mobile phone world, competition is a relative term.

This is cool! I'd pay for it-- but it better be priced right. Closer to $100 than $200. If they do that they'll have a winner. The story says this will be available at the end of this month-- yet the ultra polite and efficient reps at AT&T have no info on it.

Why does Apple and Pantech establish exclusive contracts with AT&T? Did AT&T help fund the phone research for both companies? Why don't they develop their phones for universal service, like the Europeans do? If Apple's iPhone could be used with any carrier, many more will be sold, even at the original high prices. Cellphones are getting so common that the value added by the carrier becomes the selling factor for millions of customers. I rather have a plain featureless and reliable phone that I can use with any carrier. Then I will select the carrier that gives me the best personal and phone service.
For me, a dual keyboard phone isn't a selling factor, but another gimmick that only a few will need, such as emailers who are not agile with their fingers (or their minds).

I'm over the "exclusive to this provider" gimmick. They obviously make a lot of $$$ by forcing 2 year contracts. I've had cell phone service with all of the majors. I got frustrated and signed up with AT&T back in the early days of Cingular. Their customer service rocks. It seems to be peopled by polite folks intent on helping me. My phones are due for an upgrade in Dec, but their customer svc. tells me that I can upgrade when this comes out in October and be credited the difference in Dec. Yeah, I know they'll be earning interest on my $$$, but you know what? They are willing to apply the difference to future bills. I'm as cheap as the next person, but because they are trying to keep me happy, I may splurge and buy myself an iPhone before Christmas.
