I think we all know how annoying it is to have to go somewhere for DNA testing. I mean, honestly, how many hours and days have I wasted waiting around for a paternity test? It's a figure I'd rather not think about. That's why I'm pretty psyched about NEC's new DNA lab that they managed to stuff into a briefcase.
So what can the fancy briefcase do? Oh, let me count the things it can do:
(1) take cell samples, (2) extract the DNA, (3) perform polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification to generate copies of the DNA, (4) perform electrophoresis to measure the spacing between DNA bands (to create the genetic fingerprint), and (5) perform short tandem repeat (STR) analysis to create a unique genetic profile for the individual. And it does all this in a fraction of the time that it takes a traditional lab! Man, I need to get me one of these.
